Election Day 2026: Can Republicans Hold Congress and Keep Trump's Agenda Moving? IT'S UP TO YOU!

By Michael Cunningham Sr. | Mike's Observations | November 3, 2026

America is voting today, and the consequences will reach far beyond Washington, D.C.

Today, millions of Americans are making a decision that will help determine the direction of this nation for the next two years.

The 2026 midterm elections are here.

Every seat in the United States House of Representatives is on the ballot, along with 35 Senate seats. Republicans currently control both chambers, but their majorities are narrow.

The question hanging over Washington this morning is simple:

Will Republicans hold their ground, or will Democrats take control of Congress?

For President Donald Trump, the answer could determine how much of his agenda he can accomplish during the remaining two years of his presidency.

But I believe this election is about something even bigger than Donald Trump.

It is about the kind of government Americans want and whether the people we send to Washington will finally remember whom they work for.

Republicans Have an Opportunity — But Victory Is Not Guaranteed

History tells us that midterm elections are frequently difficult for the party occupying the White House.

Republicans are facing that familiar challenge today.

Democrats believe dissatisfaction with the administration, economic pressures, healthcare costs, and the war with Iran could help them regain control of Congress.

Republicans, meanwhile, are emphasizing their record on taxes, immigration enforcement, economic policy, and national security.

Both parties are making their case.

And neither has earned the right to declare victory before the American people finish voting.

I have lived through enough elections in my 82 years to know that predictions are not election results.

The television experts can talk until they are blue in the face. The pollsters can publish their percentages, and political consultants can spend millions trying to convince Americans what everybody else thinks.

But when the ballots are counted, the voters have the final say.

What a Republican Victory Could Mean

If Republicans retain control of both the House and Senate, President Trump would have a stronger opportunity to pursue his legislative priorities.

That could include additional tax legislation, border security measures, spending reforms, and other elements of his economic and national security agenda.

Republican control of the Senate would also allow the party to continue directing the confirmation process for federal judges and administration nominees.

But here is something I want to make perfectly clear.

Winning an election is not the same thing as earning a blank check.

If Republicans retain power, they must deliver results.

They must address the cost of living, the federal debt, government waste, and the everyday problems facing American families.

The American people deserve more than campaign promises and political speeches.

They deserve responsible government.

What Happens if Democrats Win?

A Democratic victory in the House would change Washington considerably.

Democrats would control House committees, decide which legislation advances, and gain greater authority to investigate the administration.

If Democrats also capture the Senate, they could influence federal appointments and judicial confirmations while gaining additional leverage over the president's legislative agenda.

Supporters of the Democratic Party argue that such a victory would provide an important check on presidential power and allow Congress to address concerns about healthcare, affordability, and executive authority.

Republicans see the situation differently. Many believe divided government would create more political confrontation and make it harder for Trump to carry out the agenda on which he was elected.

Either way, the consequences would be significant.

And those consequences would not stop at the Washington city limits.

They would eventually reach our homes, businesses, farms, and communities.

The Kitchen Table Still Matters More Than Washington Politics

I don't know about you, but I am getting mighty tired of hearing politicians congratulate themselves while ordinary Americans struggle with everyday expenses.

Have you bought groceries lately?

Have you looked at your insurance bill, your electric bill, or the cost of maintaining a vehicle?

Washington can argue about economic statistics all day long, but a family trying to stretch its paycheck knows exactly how far that money goes.

I remember when five dollars bought a respectable sack of groceries.

Today, five dollars can disappear before you get out of the produce department.

And that is no laughing matter.

Republicans say their economic policies will create prosperity. Democrats say their proposals will make life more affordable.

Well, here is an idea.

Whichever party wins, how about proving it?

Give the American people measurable results instead of another two years of excuses.

America Needs Leadership, Not Another Political Circus

I am a conservative, and I make no secret of it.

I believe in personal responsibility, constitutional government, religious liberty, a strong national defense, and an economy that rewards honest work.

But I also believe Republicans should be held accountable when they fail to live up to those principles.

Party loyalty should never replace common sense.

And patriotism should never mean pretending that everything our elected officials do is right.

We need representatives who understand that public office is a responsibility, not a lifetime entitlement.

We need people who can disagree without treating every political opponent as an enemy.

And we need elected officials who remember that America belongs to its citizens, not to whichever political party happens to hold power.

The Real Test Begins After Election Day

Tonight, television networks will begin displaying red and blue maps.

Political commentators will announce victories, analyze defeats, and tell us what everything means.

Some races may be decided quickly. Others could take days before the results become clear.

But regardless of who wins, the real work begins when the new Congress takes office.

Will Washington reduce wasteful spending?

Will lawmakers take meaningful action on the national debt?

Will they protect constitutional freedoms?

Will they make life more affordable for working families and retirees?

Will they put the nation's interests ahead of their own political careers?

Those are the questions that matter to me.

And those are the questions we should still be asking long after the campaign signs come down.

My Final Observation

I have watched this country go through wars, recessions, political scandals, national tragedies, and more elections than I care to count.

Through it all, America has remained a remarkable nation.

Not because our politicians are perfect.

Heaven knows they aren't.

But because the American people still possess the power to choose their leaders and hold them accountable.

Today, that responsibility belongs to the voters.

Tomorrow, it belongs to those who have been elected.

And if Republicans win, I hope they remember something important:

A victory is not permission to do whatever they please. It is an obligation to do what they promised.

The same standard should apply to Democrats.

America deserves nothing less.

God bless America, and may wisdom guide those entrusted with her future.
